Water: You may remember that I was considering expanding the water ministry to other locations. In July Noemi was part of a group visiting the jungle in the north of Peru to give some (not water-related) training and she took a few filters with her and gave a few water & hygiene workshops too. Weโve been requested to go back with more training and filters for at least 5 village churches and potentially families too. Travel would be by boat for the last 11 hours of the trip, so once youโre there you want to make the most of it – weโd be looking at about a month in total. Please pray as we look into details and decide whether to plan this trip next year.
Youth: Over the past 3 weekends Iโve tried out various ways to engage the MG teenagers both in Abancay and in their home villages. It hasnโt all been plain sailing but the result so far is much more productive than not having tried! Iโm really encouraged by several of the young people both in the villages and in Abancay (Jose, Dimas,
Ester, Rosmery, Bety) as well as disappointed by others who have not responded yet (Marilin, Carla, Sonia). Tania was baptised at the recent church conference and has been coming regularly since. A few of the girls in Abancay have young children so Iโm building up my collection of toys and have spent several sermons playing with children so their parents can focus! Iโm planning to basically alternate weekends between Abancay and village youth work (with some gaps). Please pray as I continue to investigate the best ways to reach these young people.

Thank you so much for your prayers in the days before the camp. It was wonderful to know you were praying with me. I was ill on Tuesday last week โ lots of lying down groaning, and nothing to eat! I slowly improved through the week but didnโt have much time left for preparation, and was still not eating properly. Amazingly my energy levels rose towards the weekend and I had everything ready.
Give thanks that AIDIA agreed to lend me a car for the trip (even though they werenโt officially linked with the event). I only had minor issues like a dead battery on pickup, working out the central locking, and the boot jamming! Others had worse problems, with the brakes failing on the minivan weโd hired. After leaving Abancay around 5pm they eventually arrived about 1.30am. Phone signal is nonexistent for most of the route so we only found out they were stuck around 11pm and then I went to fetch the passengers. Thank God that everyone (including the driver) arrived safe in the end.
I always find rural trips challenging and exhausting, ditto for youth camps which usually involve minimal sleep. I had been specifically praying that I would remain patient, generous and helpful, and definitely saw Godโs character rather than mine coming through over this first couple of days as many things didnโt go as I expected (although the clay showed a bit more towards the end…). Also give thanks for his help staying alert and cheerful on the drive home last night.
We had 42 teenagers come (weโd estimated 40 in planning), including a core 7 who had come to the previous camp or the studies I ran. Most were from church families with about 10 invited by friends. Give thanks that God motivated teenagers and parents and gave them to us for these 2 days!
The worship group from Abancay were excellent. I had thought they were going over the top with their planning and equipment, but their music was a very high standard and the teenagers loved it and couldnโt wait for each next worship session. The band all pitched in with 3 music workshops too, giving everyone a go as well as some basic teaching.
The local churches were extremely supportive โ they turned up in force (and attended much of the camp along with their little kids, slightly complicating the age dynamic). They provided most of the food and cooked and served all of it, for over 100 people altogether. The churches together decided to cover the inscription cost for all who couldnโt pay, and many people stayed afterwards to clean the buildings and areas that the school had let us use. We were so encouraged that they are prioritising the ministry with their teenagers.
Praise God for His driving force and His help to make this camp happen and to make it, despite the difficulties, a great success. May it be a success not just in terms of what we see, but in terms of what He sees โ the heart.

Water in AIDIA It was great to join Noemi this week on a trip to Mariscal Gamarra โ mostly visiting schools where she introduced the water filters last year. Iโve been working in this valley with the filters for about 6 years and while itโs been very slow, itโs encouraging now to see that in many of the schools people are familiar with them because they have one at home. Pray for the new opportunities that working in schools brings in reaching so many more people. It was also great to be the one tagging along while Noemi led the trip โ she has achieved so much. We visited various church families too โ Iโm always astonished by the generosity and hospitality weโre shown.
I had a lovely day last week discovering a outdoor pool down by the river with another missionary doctor from nearby Curahausi. Pray for more people like her and that I make the effort to say yes when they invite me! Itโs been great to get out and running again with Lourdes (in the cooler early mornings) and to have others join us โ sometimes it turns into an evangelism or discipleship time afterwards. It’s wonderful having Sofi & Giancarlos and Santiago back in Abancay โ and living just round the corner. We praise God that thereโs no sign of Gโs cancer returning. They have a restaurant close by where I try to go once a week.
My increased focus on the youth from the rural areas is coming along slowly. Iโve reestablished contact with 7 people who moved here from Mariscal Gamarra to study, and have met up with a few of them. Pray as I keep trying to find times to meet with them individually or together. Pray that they can have increased involvement in the local churches in the city and a deeper relationship with God.
Iโve made 3 trips to Mariscal Gamarra since Iโve been back, with my church or with others from AIDIA. Itโs been great to reconnect with many after the 9 months away. With many teenagers having left school the group there looks very different, but Iโve been tracking down those who are still there and making new contacts. The regional Baptist church group is planning a Youth Event and many (including those who donโt go to church) are keen. Pray for us as we plan and arrange the event. I feel itโs a hugely significant thing for the advance of Godโs kingdom in the area โ it will be the first church event for youth there ever. We tried to do it last year but it was postponed, so pray it actually goes ahead this time! Pray also for M, who didnโt get into her university course last year (very common โ most people spend a year or 2 in an academy first.) and has lost some motivation and vision for what to do next. Iโve started a study with her and 2 others, starting with salvation by grace (also the theme of the upcoming event). Itโs exciting seeing them realise that itโs not about how good we are.
!! LATEST NEWS !!
I had a great time on retreat last month (please ask if you want more details).
I fly back to Peru on 1st April, with renewed vision for taking the work forward.
We still need more donors for Noemi and the water projects but don’t worry, she is getting paid.
Lizzie’s News – February 2024
I just spent a wonderful month at Lee Abbey in Devon. Usually, people there are either part of the working community, or guests at a Christian conference โ I was neither, but had complete freedom to make space to listen to God. I have come away refreshed and inspired โ with lots of ideas both for my own personal spiritual life and for ministry going forward. I loved living with the community there and really miss them, having begun the round of goodbyes that will now continue through March!
If youโd like to know more about what I did or what God spoke to me about, please ask. Iโm very happy to share a summary or some of the details (thereโs a lot!).
Plans
One outcome of my retreat time was some clearer vision for ministry going forward. I have some discussion to do with the relevant people I work with, but I hope to:
- Continue giving more water projects responsibility to Noemi (and potentially a future second person) so that I work a little less on this day to day, but carry on with vision, fundraising, technical input and some practical involvement.
- Increase focus on the teenagers from Mariscal Gamarra, with time dedicated to meeting with them, and identifying/training someone to help or eventually take over in the long-term.
- Clearly set out all the tasks involved in the Personnel role, select which I can reasonably do part-time, and share out the others among the team. Probably look to step out of this role in another 5-6 years.
Funding
THANK YOU to all who have given towards Noemiโs role. We are looking for more donations especially monthly pledges โ please consider whether you can help, here: Sim Support – Donate Choose the option โto help a particular projectโ and type in: โPE 91151 Holistic Quechua Ministries, Abancayโ.
This funding is for Noemiโs wages & benefits, office costs, travel and training, and also purchase of the water filters. My own personal financial support levels are healthy, and currently make up the shortfall, but the idea is to make this project financially separate.
Coming Up:
27th Feb: Visiting a Primary school in Hastings to talk about water.
8th Mar: Visiting Barnabas church youth group.
10th Mar: Goodbye to Barnabas and Shrewsbury.
18th -29th Mar: In Kenya for Personnel conference, then conflict resolution training – and a few daysโ safari!
1st Apr: Fly to Peru. I hope to spend the first few weeks re-acclimatising and reconnecting with people.
Give Thanks
- All I have been able to do on this Home Assignment, and for great friends old and new.
- Time to listen to God, and for his love and encouragement.
- Godโs beautiful creation.
Please Pray…
- For upcoming travel between 3 continents.
- As I say goodbyes, always a sad process, and there are so many.
- That I continue to make space for God and rely on him.
!! ๐ Lizzie Prayer News ๐ !! – April 2023
Iโm slowly getting sorted out for my Sending Country Assignment. Iโve booked my flights to the UK and arrive on 28th June, a month or so earlier than I originally planned so that I can enjoy some British summer holiday activities! Iโve been contacting churches and will be planning dates for visits from September. I plan to be in the UK a bit longer this time. Our SIM Peru conference (usually the only event in the January school holidays here) will be at the end of February, so I donโt need to rush back. Iโm looking forward to more time in the UK and the things this will enable me to do, but it feels like a long time to be away from here.
Iโm now getting packed and ready for a 2 week holiday with my Dad. We planned it 3 years ago and of course it wasnโt possible then. Iโm looking forward to time together and our 6-day mountain-lakes-and-glaciers trek (with a week beforehand to get used to the altitude)! Please pray for all our travels, that he can adjust to the altitude, and for his family back in the UK.
I thank God that Noemi is able to go to the CAWST training course in Colombia. Dina will be going with her as she tends to travel with us or help with our training despite not working in the water ministry specifically. A lot of the course deals with planning and communication and we hope itโll be useful more generally, as well as giving more awareness of water and hygiene topics. Pray for their travel and participation.
It has been exciting to re-establish contact with the regional government department for sanitation, and to give them training. This led to more contacts in the villages where we work. We can go and introduce ourselves but we notice a huge difference in confidence and opportunities when contact is made through official channels. Weโre also seeing the benefit of Noemi working with me full-time and being able to travel Mon-Fri. Weโre able to visit government offices, schools, and health posts which is leading to more opportunities for training and relationships. Pray as we work out the balance of this. The changes we want to see need consistent visits and follow-up so we need to work out the limit of how many new contacts to make at once.
Noemi is away a lot over April and May (she supports with another project helping people read and understand the Bible, as well as going on the training course I mentioned), and I am now away for the next 3 weeks. This is partly why we did a lot of travel in March. Pray for our schedule over the next couple of months, that we can make the necessary return visits to the villages so that people donโt forget what they were taught last time.
I mentioned in my March newsletter that I have a cleaner, Sandra. Sheโs from Cusco, studying in Abancay and I have known her vaguely for a while. She now comes each week and itโs a huge improvement on my once-a-month-if-youโre-lucky cleaning! I plan a mix of being here or being out โ while itโs a distraction for both of us she really seems to appreciate the conversations we have (ranging from โwhat is missionโ to โshould we celebrate Easter?โ and locating China and South Korea on my inflatable globe). She has no other steady income to pay her rent here, so Iโm glad it can be a mutual help. Of course it will stop when I go to the UK so I am considering asking her to stay in my flat while Iโm away โ sheโd still have to pay bills but it would be another way to help us both out. Pray for her as she grows in her faith and finishes her studies and for our relationship.
News From Lizzie – March / April 2023
Protests have been much more peaceful and less frequent since I returned to Abancay in late January, and there have been no more problems with the supply of goods. However, over the last few days, the coastal areas of Peru (and Ecuador) have been suffering from Cyclone Yaku – Quechua for โwaterโ – which has caused lots of flooding. In some lighter news, I have found a cleaner and bought a TV firestick, cushions & lights! โ all of which make me enjoy my flat even more.
24-25 Mar: Water training in Aucha 1-3 Apr (approx.): Water training and youth work in Mariscal Gamarra 6-8 Apr: Sunday School teacher training in Abancay Please prayโฆ – For the Sunday school training event in April – That the dates for Noemiโs training course fit her schedule and sheโs able to go. – For those suffering after Cyclone Yaku. – Lots more photoโs on facebook. Well worth a look.
Travel Out to the Communities – March 2023 ![]()
Travel out to the communities begins in March after the most intense time of the rainy season. This does seem to have properly arrived now – finally there is lots of rain, most nights and often during the day, itโs great to see the snow on the mountains when the cloud clears. Pray for the crops as heavy rain and hail can be as harmful as no rain. Pray for Noemi and me as we start to plan dates for our visits.
This year, as Iโve mentioned, itโs just Noemi and me in the Water team, but she is full time! We had a great initial meeting and made some plans for the year. I really wanted to establish an equal working partnership where by June sheโll be ready to take over for the rest of the year (as Iโm due to go on my Home Assignment) without her feeling overwhelmed. Most mornings we work together in AIDIA, she is translating lots of my teaching material into Quechua, and making me think some of it through a bit more in the process. Pray that we can prepare well for the year and work well together.
Iโd like to send Noemi on a training course about delivering basic WASH (Water / Sanitation / Hygiene) training. We have the money, but one course is in Honduras (complicated to get to) and the course in Colombia (much simpler) hasnโt confirmed dates yet. Please pray she can go on this training โ Iโve been on several courses delivered by this charity (CAWST) and they are extremely…
Baptist Youth Camp โDecide Todayโ From Lizzie
I helped organise this event for 90 teenagers, and was involved with teaching, music, logo (thanks Faith!) & T-shirts. I was keen to give the group from Mariscal Gamarra the opportunity to go, so offered to provide their transport. Instead of the 3 or 4 Iโd expected, 14 people came and I needed more drivers! It was a wonderful event with many deciding to follow Jesus.
